Green Government

Miami-Dade County government provides crucial services to 2.3 million residents in the form of emergency management, elections support, mass transit and more. Nearly half that number of residents also receives city-like services such as waste and recycling collection, law enforcement and parks.

These services require significant purchases of materials and access to reliable energy -- both electricity and fuel -- to support operations, equipment and vehicles. In the process of providing services to the community, government operations consume millions of gallons of fuel for a variety of purposes such as its light duty passenger cars; heavy duty vehicles such as buses, fire trucks and garbage trucks; heavy duty equipment such as mowers, bulldozers and bucket trucks; and pumps for water and sewer services and storm water control. In addition, the County owns or leases nearly 1,500 facilities with a combined floor area of over 48.2 million square feet. About 96 percent of these facilities are County-owned, and vary widely in size and function.

To facilitate the sustainable transformation of the County with respect to organizational culture, operations, infrastructure and service delivery, the Office of Sustainability was created in 2007. The office assists departments and leads initiatives that enable the County to target and realize improved performance that simultaneously values economic, social and environmental impacts and opportunities. Miami-Dade’s challenge is to continue providing these essential services and shift our business operations to a more sustainable, energy efficient and, in the long run, more economical model.

On Aug. 28, 2010, Miami-Dade County received the "Most Outstanding Green Government" award at the U.S. Green Building Council South Florida Chapter’s GalaVerde. Read more about Miami-Dade County department efforts to go green.

Miami-Dade GreenCities and Organizations
Miami-Dade County includes 34 municipalities and numerous organizations. Collaborating with them on our sustainability efforts is integral to our collective success in achieving our greenhouse gas reduction goals. Early in the process, the GreenPrint planning team established a collaborative network with municipalities, who are in different stages of actual planning and implementation. We have linked existing sustainability plans in order to share best practices. Most cities are interested in the subject, and we will continue to work on common initiatives.
